What is a GI Map?
A GI Map is a stool test that you can complete in the privacy of your home that provides insight into your gut microbiome. Sounds glamorous, right? I understand that considering taking a sample of your own stool and sending it off for analysis probably is about the last thing any of us want to do. However…the knowledge we can glean about your gut health is well worth the momentary unpleasantness of completing the test. I’ll walk you through how it’s done.
First, you will receive the kit in the mail with all the information you will need to take your test. After a small sample is obtained, you ship the kit back to the lab for analysis. In 2-3 weeks, the results are sent directly to us where we can break down the findings. We will learn if you have any gut dysbiosis (imbalance of healthy gut bacteria), presence of pathogenic bacteria, parasites, fungus, yeast, as well as markers to assess to for inflammation, digestive function, immune response, and even be able assess for gluten intolerance. These findings have a spectrum of applications that go beyond just GI symptoms. There are many links to autoimmune, neurologic, and dermatologic conditions, and in my world trying to address pain and reduce inflammation, there can be applications for joint and spine pain. Mounting evidence continues to support how important a healthy gut is for our optimal function. So, whether you are hurting, have been experiencing gut dysfunction, or just interested in your gut microbiome, let me know and we can discuss if a GI Map may be a deeper dive you want to consider!
